Sue goes to the Dubois Antler Rendezvous

The Bull Elk named "Sue" first trip was to the Dubois Antler Rendezvous. Here he greated visitors and had his picture taken many, many times.

Sue saw so many elk antlers being wheel barreled around traded and bought and sold between venders.

The children from school came and were delighted with "Sue" playing ring around the rosy, all fall down.

He posed well against the trees and saw his first rainbow.

As night approaches Sue experiences his first sunset as the deer herd across the road gaze over at him in wonder. He may have visitors tonight.

The weather finally cleared today and the bull elk statue named "Sue" left the workshop for the last time today. The finish work now needs to be done with the ears in their final location and the antlers in place. The workshops ceiling is too low for this.

In the first image Sue is close to complete with some work to be done around the antlers and the base is still to be finished.

When Sue first saw the snowy mountains he gazed out there as if he would walk away.

"Sue" received his heart and we saw a twinkle in his eye. The heart is on a chain inside the statue.

After Sue made it through the doorway Kurt needed to reattach the ears and then move him into the front yard for enough room to attach the antlers.

As we left Sue alone in our yard the first robin of the year landed near him and the rabbits came out to join him in the yard.

We are in the process of completing a children's book "The story of Sue, How do you do".

last minute finish work

Kurt is adding a little grass around the base and will later add dirt and small rocks to create a natural presentation. This will need to be done once the statue is outside.

Brown antler has been used on the mane and head area where as hard white antler used more on the body. Kurt is 6' 3" so that will give you an idea as to the size of the statue.

Kurt is doing last minute finish work on his statue. The elk takes up most of his workshop now and will just make it out the door if the ears are taken off.

Kurt was going to move him outside today for the last time but 2 feet of snow is predicted. There is still quite a bit of work to do once the statue is outside but that is no weather to work in.

Kurt has taken some antler pieces from the statue and made key chains and simple necklaces that are for sale. This is your opportunity to own a piece of what is sure to become an icon. Limited quantities are available from the statue antler only. All are $12 each which includes shipping and handling. These are just representational samples as no two pieces of antler are the same. They are available in either brown or white antler.

In the photo the styles each have a letter. a.- d. are on a large, sturdy 1 1/4" key ring. a. is an antler point, b. is a piece of antler, c. is a slab of antler, and d. is a random chunk of antler. e. and f. are 3/4" colored key rings with a small point or chunk of antler. g. is an antler point on a leather thong long enough to wear as a necklace.

The face and neck area of the antler statue is proving to be time consuming with meticulous detail work. Each antler attached can change the facial expression.

The lower image is about three weeks into the project.

In the upper image Kurt is locating the position of the ears in respect to the antlers. The elk is now as tall as the doorway without ears or antlers so he must be rolled outside to make these determinations. Room needs to be left for the ears to be permanently attached later when the elk leaves his workshop for the last time.

Kurt Gordon of the Antler Workshop & Gallery is in the process of building a life size bull elk statue. The statue when complete will be located in front of his gallery in Dubois, Wyoming. Check back in a few weeks to see images of the finished statue.

In the first image Kurt is in his workshop about a week into the project with the body shape roughed out. The legs took a great deal of time to complete, adding each antler point individually.

In the next image the legs are complete, the body is still very rough and there is just a hint of the neck area. The statue is now on rollers and this was its first appearance outside. Without the antlers it just fits out of the workshop doors.

In the next image the body and legs are fully complete. The head position has been determined and the neck and head area are just roughed out. In the last image Kurt is locating and determining the neck and head position, very important to the next stages of building.
